The FDA is warning consumers and pharmacies that a new, cheaper drug is linked to a risk of liver cancer. The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers and pharmacies that a new, cheaper drug is linked to a risk of liver cancer. (Photo by Mark C. Shafee/AP)
The agency said its warning label is based on findings from a study involving more than 40,000 people taking the cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor for high cholesterol, but it did not include the link to a known risk of liver cancer. The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Texas, San Antonio.
The study showed the risk of developing the condition was increased by about 3 percent per year.
It said the Crestor was developed and marketed as Crestor, a cholesterol-lowering drug, based on data from a clinical trial.
In the study, which was submitted to the FDA in January, the researchers found a small but significant risk of liver cancer among participants taking Crestor. The results were published in the July issue ofJAMA Internal Medicine.
“It is a very small but significant risk of developing liver cancer and it is very rare in the general population,” said Dr. David Shafee, director of the division of at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
In the study, the researchers also found that the risk was lower among participants taking a similar dose of the drug, which is sold as the generic Crestor. They also noted that the risk was reduced by about 10 percent per year.
The Crestor study was sponsored by AstraZeneca.
In the study, which was submitted to the FDA in January, the researchers found a small but significant risk of developing the condition among participants taking Crestor, a similar cholesterol-lowering drug.
It also found a small but significant risk of developing the condition among participants taking the generic version, made by GlaxoSmithKline.
The FDA said Crestor is used to treat people with the condition who have had at least five years to undergo an operation on their liver.
It also said the FDA said the risk of developing the condition was lower among participants taking the drug, but it did not include the risk of a known risk of developing liver cancer. The FDA said the risk of developing the condition was not found in the Crestor study.
The FDA said it is aware of the risk of developing the condition.
“This information was only submitted to us as a response to an increased concern that the FDA may have raised the issue of liver cancer,” said Dr. David Shafee, chief of the division of at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
“The FDA has also communicated our findings to our patients about our findings and our concerns about the potential risk of developing liver cancer.”
Dr. Joseph M. Follicott, president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, said Crestor was used to treat people who have at least five years to undergo a surgical operation on their liver.
“We know that this is very rare, and it is very rare. It is not known whether Crestor is actually a known risk. We would expect a small, but important, risk of developing liver cancer, and that is a very small but significant risk,” Follicott said.
The FDA is aware of the risk of developing the condition and has warned people about the risk of developing the condition.
“We are working with our patients about this, and we are aware that we have concerns and have made a determination about the risk of developing liver cancer. We are working with our patients about this, and we are aware that we have concerns and we are making a determination,” Follicott said.
Fight back against Crestor's dangerous medicine with improved outcomes for people with high blood pressure
Crestor, containing the potent statin Lipitor (atorvastatin) is a widely prescribed statin that lowers blood pressure by slowing the progression of liver damage. Statin Lipitor lowers the risk of heart attack, stroke, and liver damage by a multiple for people with high blood pressure. It also lowers the risk of hypertension by 80 percent.
Crestor is one of the most widely prescribed statins in the U. S., with millions of prescriptions dispensed each year. It's available as a generic, with the exception of certain patients who have severe kidney disease,” said lead author and president of the National Lipid Association. “This includes people who are at increased risk for heart attacks or strokes. Statin Lipitor is a statin, but it plays a critical role in lowering blood pressure by blocking an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase, which is responsible for the production of high levels of this cholesterol-related substance. Statins that lower cholesterol are generally not recommended, but some people with high cholesterol tolerate them well.
